Black Hills State University Names Kyle Nelsen as Associate Vice President of Facilities Services

kyle nelsenBlack Hills State University has announced the hiring of Kyle Nelsen as Associate Vice President of Facilities Services, bringing with him extensive experience in facilities operations, capital project management, and team leadership.

Nelsen joins BHSU from Wayne State College in Wayne, Nebraska, where he served as Director of Facility Services since 2018. In that role, he oversaw more than 1.2 million square feet of campus facilities across 128 acres, managed a $4.2 million operating budget, and led a team of 60 employees. Nelsen has directed more than $120 million in capital improvement projects, including academic, residential, athletic, and infrastructure initiatives.

“Kyle brings a strong track record of leadership, collaboration, and strategic facilities planning that will support BHSU’s continued growth and student success,” said Kathy Johnson, vice president for finance and administration. “His experience and student-centered approach make him a great fit for our campus community.”

Nelsen’s professional background includes expertise in facilities management, preventative maintenance programs, and the implementation of systems to improve operational efficiency and extend the life of campus assets.

He succeeds Randy Culver, who retired from BHSU after 34 years of service to the university.

Nelsen holds a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Technology from Wayne State College.  

He will begin his role at BHSU on May 18, 2026.
