Because most college students receive some type of financial aid, it is a worthwhile effort for your family to explore all possible options. And we’re here to help! This includes loans, grants, scholarships, and work-study provided through federal, state, institutional, and local resources.
Financial aid can be awarded based on financial need or merit, which considers high school academic performance, and can encompass a wide range of assistance—from loans that must be repaid, to grants and scholarships that are gifts, to work-study opportunities that enable students to earn money.
Check out some resources we've put together.

STEM students to lean on for support and inspiration. All S-STEM Scholars are co-enrolled
in one of their first-year science or math courses to foster collaboration, academic
support, and community-building within BHSU's science and math programs. S-STEM Scholars
receive one-on-one advising with a professional advisor in addition to a science or
math faculty mentor. Students also participate in a special section of the General
Studies 100 class (GS100), where they learn more about pursuing careers in the STEM
fields while actively building their professional network.
The S-STEM Scholars Program targets students with financial need who have a passion
and who show academic promise for a career in the STEM fields.
This program is funded by the National Science Foundation Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (S-STEM) (Division of Undergraduate Education, Award #2221350).
Eligibility
Participants must pursue a major in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Physical
Science, or Mathematics. Students must also have demonstrated financial need (Pell

for the S-STEM Scholars Program may receive up to $10,000 in annual scholarship. This
scholarship is renewable for up to four years if the student maintains good academic
standing and the required financial need. These scholarship dollars can also be stacked
on top of any other financial aid you receive from Black Hills State University. Applicants
must be citizens or nationals of the United States.
Applicants who have completed dual-credit undergraduate courses during high school are eligible and encouraged to apply.
To Apply:
Applicants must be students new to BHSU with plans for four years of study at BHSU.
Academic plans should include earning a degree that could lead to a career in STEM
research or pursuit of a graduate-level degree in a STEM discipline. S-STEM funds
are not intended for students planning to pursue a career in healthcare.
Completed applications will be reviewed as received. Completed applications include the FAFSA, BHSU enrollment application, and the S-STEM application components, including a recommendation supplied by a teacher. When searching for scholarships not offered by Black Hills State University there are a number of avenues to explore. First, we recommend checking with your high school guidance counselor. Your counselor often has information from local businesses and organizations about scholarships they award to high school seniors.
Another popular method of looking for outside scholarships is through Internet sites and scholarship search companies. Beware of companies that guarantee scholarships for a fee. You’ve heard it before: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
The Federal Pell Grant is a grant for undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need based on FAFSA information and have not earned a bachelor’s, graduate, or professional degree. The amounts change yearly; for the most up-to-date information, visit the Federal Pell Grant link above.
Unlike a loan, the Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid, except under certain circumstances, which can be found here.
Application and Disbursement Steps:
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is a grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. SEOG funds are limited by U.S. Department of Education allocation; priority is given to those students who apply early by completing the FAFSA.
Application and Disbursement Steps:
Congress created the Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program through the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 that provides grants for up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low income families. In exchange for receiving a TEACH Grant, you must agree to serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves low-income students. As a recipient of a TEACH Grant, you must teach at least four academic years within eight calendar years of completing the program of study for which you received the TEACH Grant.
IMPORTANT: If you fail to complete this service obligation, all amounts of the TEACH Grants that you received will be converted to Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loans. You must then repay this loan to the U.S. Department of Education. You will be charged interest from the date the grant(s) was disbursed.
Application and Disbursement Steps:
If you are a new Direct Loan borrower, please go to Federal Student Aid to complete the MPN and Loan Entrance Counseling for the Direct Loans. You will use your FSA ID to get into the site and you will use it again for your electronic signature. If you have any questions, please contact the Student Financial Aid Office at (605)642-6145.
The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program includes Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans. Your FAFSA Form is the application for this program. If you are an undergraduate student, the maximum amount you can borrow each year varies from $5,500 to $12,500 depending on your year in school and dependency level. If you are a graduate student, the maximum amount you can borrow each year is $20,500.
The Direct Subsidized Loan is a need-based loan for undergraduate students who have financial need based on the information submitted on the FAFSA. The interest on the Direct Subsidized Loan is paid by the U.S. Department of Education while the student is in school at least half-time.
The Direct Unsubsidized Loan is a loan not based on financial need for undergraduate and graduate students. This loan accrues interest while the student is still in school, but the borrower has the option to pay the interest while in school. If he/she chooses not to pay the interest, the interest is added to the principal of the loan.
Application and Disbursement Steps:
Interest Rates and Loan Fees:
The interest rates on federal loans vary based on loan type and disbursement date. For current info, please visit the Federal Student Aid website.
Repayment:
Students who use Direct Loans are not required to make payments until six months after they leave school or drop below half-time enrollment. Before entering repayment, a student will want to review borrowed loan amounts at the Federal Student Aid website and develop a repayment plan.
The Direct Parent PLUS Loan is a loan made available to eligible parents of a dependent, undergraduate student to help pay for the student’s education.
The loan process does require a credit check and an application to be completed by the parent. If the application is denied, the parent can submit an Appeal or find an Endorser. If an appeal is not submitted or endorser found, the student may be eligible for Additional Unsubsidized Loan funds.
Application and Disbursement Steps:
Interest Rates and Loan Fees:
The interest rates on federal loans vary based on loan type and disbursement date. For current info, please visit the Federal Student Aid website.

Parent PLUS Loan borrowers are eligible for several repayment plans. Parent borrowers will want to review borrowed loan amounts at the Federal Student Aid website and develop a repayment plan.
Under federal law, the authority for schools to make new Perkins Loans ended on Sept. 30, 2017, and final disbursements were permitted through June 30, 2018. As a result, students can no longer receive Perkins Loans.

The loans listed below are a historical list of private loans which BHSU students have borrowed over the last three years. As you can see, there are various private programs available to students who may not be eligible for federal aid or who may need additional funding. Loan limits, interest rates and repayment terms vary, you will want to review each one to see which one is best for you. A cosigner may allow a better interest rate. Also a self-certification form will be required, of which your lender will forward to you.

Listed below are several sites you may want to explore in order to learn more about financial aid and discover other possible financial aid sources:
The scholarship searches listed above are free.
To apply for federal aid, you will complete the FAFSA® form. For more information, check out the FAFSA information above.
In addition to federal aid, BHSU has a separate process and application for scholarships. The scholarship application can be found above.
While you might not qualify for federal grants, Federal Unsubsidized Loans are usually an option regardless of income. Feel free to contact BHSU's Student Financial Aid Office if you have questions.
Check out the Types of Aid tab above for a full list of options.
And don't forget to apply for BHSU Scholarships here. There is a priority deadline, so apply early!
FAFSA® forms submitted by March 1 will receive priority consideration for all types of aid. Applications submitted after the priority deadline will be put on a waiting list due to limited funding for certain financial aid programs.
Further steps will be required of some students after the FAFSA® form is submitted. Responding promptly to any requests for additional information is necessary to prevent delays in the aid process. We recommend that students regularly check their Yellow Jackets email for aid offer, updates, and required items. This is our main way of communicating important information regarding financial aid.
Students who meet the priority deadline and have submitted all requested documentation should receive an aid offer notification via email by late spring. Those students who apply later in the process should expect to receive an notice approximately six to eight weeks after submitting the FAFSA® form.
Your aid offer is year specific and includes any federal, state, and/or institutional aid that you qualify for at the time of packaging.
To see your aid offer, visit the Financial Aid Self-Service Portal. Based on the academic year in your notification email, choose that drop down in the to right corner of the page and then go to the Aid Offer tab.
Scholarships may reduce your eligibility for student loans, work-study, and grants other than Pell as we must follow federal regulations regarding maximum packaging of aid. Students should not turn down scholarships though.
If you have concerns about a scholarship changing your aid offer, please contact the BHSU Student Financial Aid Office.
The Student Financial Aid Office works to create the best financial aid offer we can for you. This means we will offer you the maximum amount possible based on your financial need and the funds we have available, but sometimes that still leaves a balance. We understand that that difference can seem impossible, and we want to work with you to find the best options for you. Schedule a meeting with one of our staff to talk about those options! Our contact information is:
More paperwork!? We know…not what you want to do, but we want to make sure we have as much information as we can upfront to decrease processing times while increasing our turnaround around times with you.
To request one or more of the forms, please email us at BHSUFinancial@BHSU.edu with your name, student ID number, and which form you are requesting. A PDF or DocuSign link will be sent to your YellowJackets email account.
Students attending BHSU (and all other state universities in South Dakota) are required to meet minimum progression standards and maintain a cumulative (overall) grade point average requirement in order to remain in good standing. A student who meets or exceeds the cumulative grade point average requirements listed below is considered to be in good academic standing.
Credit Hour Range | GPA Standard |
---|---|
0-44.99 | 1.8 |
45-90+ | 2.0 |
Students who do not achieve good standing in any semester are placed on probation, can continue enrollment, and are given an opportunity to improve their performance. Students on probation are required to meet with a Retention Specialist to develop a personalized plan to help students achieve a satisfactory grade point average.
Students who do not achieve this minimum standard after two semesters are suspended and are not allowed to register for subsequent semesters. Students who are suspended can petition to be considered for readmission. Petitions are reviewed by the Provost, who decides whether the petitioner has presented sufficient evidence to warrant continued enrollment.
Petitioners who successfully appeal their suspension, and students who are admitted conditionally to BHSU, are allowed to register according to certain conditions determined by the Provost. If a student meets or exceeds the GPA requirement during her/his probationary semester, s/he will be allowed to continue on probation until the cumulative GPA is raised to good academic standing.
