Black Hills State University will host the South Dakota Basic Economic Development Course (SDBEDC), formerly known as Fuel the Growth, September 28 through October 1, at the BHSU-Rapid City campus.
The four-day course is designed for professionals across economic and community development sectors and provides a comprehensive foundation in the principles and practices that support thriving communities and regional economies.
Participants will explore 10 essential economic development topics through a mix of expert-led presentations, panel discussions, case studies, and networking opportunities. Topic areas include:
- Business Development: Business Retention and Expansion, Real Estate Development and Reuse, Small Business and Entrepreneurship Development, and Economic Development Finance and Marketing/Attraction
- Organizational Development: Strategic Planning, Managing Economic Development Organizations, and Economic Development Ethics
- Community Development: Community and Neighborhood Development, and Workforce Development
The course is accredited by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and fulfills one of the required prerequisites for individuals pursuing the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation.
“This course provides a strong foundation for those looking to grow their impact in economic development,” said Dr. Ashley Armstrong, vice president for continuing education and workforce development at BHSU-Rapid City. “It brings together professionals from across disciplines to learn, connect, and build strategies that support thriving communities.”
The SDBEDC is ideal for economic development professionals, workforce development leaders, chamber of commerce staff, nonprofit and government employees, city managers and planners, elected officials, entrepreneurs, and others invested in community and regional growth.
