The Black Hills State University Music Department will host its annual Madrigal Dinner fundraiser December 4-6 at 6:30 p.m. in Meier Hall, with a social hour beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The dinner will feature an ensemble of 20 singers that specialize in performing early Renaissance music. Dressed in Renaissance attire, the singers will portray a sixteenth-century king, queen, and court who have invited the audience to a Christmas feast in the castle’s great hall, complete with a recorder ensemble, herald trumpeters, and a post-dinner concert. The concert will include works by Renaissance composers Jacques Arcadelt, Claudio Monteverdi, Thomas Weelkes, John Wilbye, and others. During the dinner portion of the evening, the ensemble and court jester will perform traditional carols, including “Lo, How a Rose,” “A Wassail Song,” and “Silent Night.”
“The Madrigal Dinner is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season with great music, food, and fun while supporting scholarships for BHSU students,” said Dr. Jonathan Nero, professor of music at BHSU.
The Madrigal Dinner is $65 per plate and features a carrot-ginger soup with toasted coconut for starters, cranberry and rosemary roasted chicken breast, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and broccolini as the main course, and an eggnog cheesecake with candied hazelnuts for dessert.
