Three Black Hills State University student organizations were recognized for their outstanding academic, community, and organizational achievements during the South Dakota Board of Regents meeting held on the BHSU campus Thursday, October 2.
Shutter Buzz received the Board of Regents Community Service Award for their involvement in the Empty Bowls Project. This soup-kitchen-style fundraiser provided Shutter Buzz the opportunity to showcase their photos. The photos were then auctioned off, with a portion of proceeds going towards local food banks. The club was represented by students Maralee Rischling and Julia Wilson and faculty advisors Skott Chandler and Allen Morris.
PONDER was awarded the Board of Regents Award for Academic Excellence. PONDER has established itself as a high-quality national award-winning publication that delivers exceptional writing, photography, and design from its student contributors. Through launch parties and panel discussion, PONDER also fosters valuable networking activities between students and industry professionals, promoting career development and community engagement. Students Alec Butterfield, Nathan Feller, Taylor SanFilippo, and Noah Westergaard, alongside faculty advisor Dr. Justin Bergh, accepted the award.
Jacket Catholic earned the Board of Regents Organizational Leadership Award for their extensive campus programming efforts such as their monthly Country Dance Nights, and their vast offerings of programs and activities. With every event the group has hosted this year, they have increased the number of students they are able to reach, while focusing on their purpose to “strengthen and grow students’ faith.” The award was accepted by students Sydney Birkel, Justin Hausmann, and Jale Yalowizer, and their faculty advisor Dr. Ryan Clark.
