BHSU Partners with Northern Hills Training Center to Create Pottery for Annual Chili Feed Fundraiser

September 26, 2025

Earlier this fall, Black Hills State University Professor of Art Desy Schoenewies and BHSU students collaborated with individuals from Northern Hills Training Center (NHTC) to bring art to life through painting ceramic bowls created by Quintin Owens, associate professor of art at BHSU.

The bowls are donated to NHTC’s 25th Annual Chili Feed Fundraiser, which is a community event featuring all-you-can-eat chili from over 15 local businesses, a dessert competition, and silent and live auctions.

“The individuals who painted the bowls are also able to talk about their bowls and the support they receive from Northern Hills Training Center,” said Michelle Powers, CEO of Northern Hills Training Center. “Our individuals are a part of the community just like everyone else, and it is so great for them to be on campus and have this opportunity."

BHSU students in Schoenewies’ K-8 Art Methods class, along with students in the studio art program and art education program assisted with the project. “The communication between our campus students and the individuals from Northern Hills is really important,” said Schoenewies. “Northern Hills individuals develop their social skills, whereas students practice art concepts and gain an understanding of working with individuals from diverse background and abilities.”

“It also shows just how meaningful art making and the process of creating can be,” said Owens. “That’s a huge connection that anybody can participate in.”

Funds raised at the chili feed will support residential and vocational services, activities, vehicles, equipment and more at NHTC. The event will be held at The Barn at Aspen Acres on Thursday, October 2 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 online or $15 at the door.
