Black Hills State University is honored to announce the establishment of the Paul and Kathy Young Family Scholarship, created by the Young Family to celebrate the enduring legacy of Paul Young and his passion for music. A beloved figure in the Spearfish community, Paul passed away peacefully at his home on April 24, 2025, at the age of 69.
The scholarship will support BHSU students pursuing music, reflecting Paul’s lifelong love of the arts and his deep commitment to helping others grow through education and mentorship.
“Paul’s life was shaped by his love of music. Whether he was playing, singing, teaching, or simply sharing a favorite song, he found joy in every note—and even more joy in connecting with others through it,” said Kathy Young, Paul’s wife. “That same spirit guided his belief in the value of education and his quiet commitment to helping others grow. This scholarship honors both his passion and his generosity.”
A proud Yellow Jacket, Paul graduated from Black Hills State College in 1978 and remained deeply connected to the university community for more than four decades. Paul was a fixture at the Donald E. Young Center, where he served for many years as the strength and conditioning coach for BHSU athletic teams and taught classes that shaped countless students' lives.
Throughout his career, Paul's greatest joy came from witnessing the success of his "kids," as he affectionately called every college student he encountered. His genuine care, mentorship, and dedication left an indelible mark on generations of BHSU alumni.
Paul maintained a lifelong passion for musical performance. He cherished every opportunity to play drums and sing, especially as a member of The Lyle Berry Band, which became well known throughout the Black Hills region.
The Paul and Kathy Young Family Scholarship fund is open to contributions from anyone who wishes to honor Paul’s memory. Donations can be made through the BHSU Foundation at BHSUFoundation.org.
