Speech Communication Education

Program Overview

The Speech Communication Education major at Black Hills State University prepares students to teach communication skills at the middle and high school levels. It blends public speaking, interpersonal communication, and education-focused coursework to equip future teachers with the knowledge and tools to succeed in the classroom. Students also complete field experiences and student teaching as part of their path to licensure, ensuring they're ready for real-world teaching environments.

Students in this program choose between two emphases: communication or theatre, allowing them to tailor their studies based on their interests and career goals. The communication emphasis focuses on topics like argumentation, group communication, and methods of teaching speech, while the theatre emphasis includes courses in acting, stagecraft, and directing. Both tracks support a well-rounded approach to teaching and help students develop specialized skills they can bring into their future classrooms.
