VISITOR INFORMATION

The Herbarium is located in western South Dakota at the northern end of the Black Hills. The BHSU Herbarium (BHSC) is usually open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. excluding weekends and university holidays. Additional hours can be arranged for visiting researchers. It is strongly recommended that visitors provide advance notice of their visit. Please contact either Mark Gabel (Mark.Gabel@BHSU.edu or 605.642.6251) or Grace Kostel (Grace.Kostel@BHSU.edu or 605.642.6543). Use of email is strongly encouraged for a prompt response as staff often work the field and may not be available immediately by telephone.

Air Travel
Spearfish is located about 50 miles north of Rapid City, SD. The closest airport with regularly scheduled commercial flights is Rapid City and is served by Allegiant, American, Delta, and United airlines or their subsidiary carriers.

Driving
Spearfish is at the junction of US Highway 85 and Interstate 90 (I-90). Most visitors to our herbarium exit I-90 at exit 12. This exit is Jackson Boulevard in Spearfish. If one travels west on Jackson Boulevard for 1.2 miles it intersects with University Street. Black Hills State University is approximately two blocks north of this intersection.

Parking
Visitor parking is available on University Street near the Student Union as indicated by the yellow signs. Herbarium staff can arrange temporary parking permits for Herbarium visitors if provided with two working days' notice.

On-Campus
The Herbarium is located in room 155 (main floor) of Jonas Science (JS), on the southern edge of campus adjacent to the large parking lot.
