Dolly served as the state’s commissioner of economic development prior to his untimely death , in a plane crash near Dubuque, Iowa. Previously, Dolly worked for Sen. James Abdnor where he assisted with agricultural and water development issues and was a chief assistant in the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Reclamation under the Reagan administration. The award will be given posthumously to his wife, Lane.
Stephens is co-owner of Harding County’s Nation’s Center News, a weekly newspaper. Prior to her newspaper work, Stephens taught junior-high students in Buffalo. She advised many student organizations and is credited with establishing the first girls’ track and basketball teams and boy’s wrestling. Her home has been opened to area high school students who live on ranches and she and her husband are also foster parents, They have also hosted a dozen kids from foreign countries.
Gary is an owner of many Taco John's restaurants and is part owner of the Perkins Restaurant in Spearfish. He has been a member of the board of directors for the Yellow Jacket and BHSU Foundations and is currently a member of the Green and Gold Club. He recently established a four-year Taco John's scholarship for business students. He has received the Outstanding BHSC Alumnus Award and Outstanding Business Alumnus Award.
Nelson has his bachelor’s degree in education, a master’s degree in organic chemistry and a Ph.D. in chemistry. Nelson worked for Exxon Research and Engineering Company and researched synthetic rubber. He obtained 81 U.S. Patents on his research.
In addition to his schooling at BHSU, Egge completed graduate work at North Texas State University and the University of Georgia. He taught and coached in Wyoming, Michigan and South Dakota. In 1970, the Deluxe Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, hired him. Terry retired in 1993 as a senior vice president and national sales manager.
Shann is currently the senior producer of creative entertainment at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Previously, Shann served as director of entertainment for Tokyo Disneyland, production manager of convention entertainment at Disney World and worked in the creative show development area at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. He has a master of fine arts degree in stage directing from Florida State.
Sebade is currently the president and CEO of First Western Bank in Wall, S.D.; CEO and vice chairman of the board of First Western Bank in Custer; and vice chairman of the board of First Western Bank in Sturgis. He has served on the Black Hills State University Foundation Board of Trustees since 1986 and served as president from 1989 to 1992. Sebade also received the BHSU Business Department’s Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Loveland has a BA degree, a supervisory credential, an administrative credential and a master’s degree. She taught school for many years and was principal of Hoover School in California from 1955 to 1971.
Richey received three degrees from BHSU: her teaching certificate in 1943, Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1951, and a Master of Science in education in 1964. She also has a Master of Arts degree from Colorado State College. During her career, she taught school at the elementary level in McLaughlin, Winner, Rapid City and overseas in Japan, France and Germany. She ended her career as a principal from 1975-1986 at South Canyon School in Rapid City and in Black Hawk. Richey has also established an education scholarship at BHSU.
Davis recently retired from the Garvey School District (students represent 19 languages) in Rosemead, California, where he had been principal since 1965. He has received many honors over the years and was one of ten people in the nation to receive the 1995 Readers Digest American Hero in Education Award. He has a Master of Arts in education administration from California State University, Los Angeles.
Backens was recognized for her long-time service to the university. She attended the university in the 1950s to earn her teaching certificate and again in the 1980s majoring in art. She has been actively involved with the BHSU Alumni Board of Directors for many years serving as vice president and secretary. She has also been active over the years with presidential inaugurations and retirements, alumni banquets and breakfasts, graduations, Swarm Day events, search and screen committees, fund raising, legislative days and the BHSU centennial celebration in 1983.
Reichert taught in Midland, S.D. from 1940-42. She then started working for the Federal Bureau of investigation (FBI) in the fingerprints department, then transferred to crime records where she worked as a writer/editor. Reichert retired from the FBI in 1980.
Johnson was named president and chief executive officer of Harvest States, a grain marketing, food processing, farm supply and services cooperative in St. Paul, Minn. Harvest States employees 3,000 people and is the nation’s second largest agricultural cooperative in terms of revenues. Prior to 1995 he was group vice president and general manager of GTA Feeds Division of Harvest States, and was director of sales and marketing, regional sales manager and feed consultant with GTA Feeds.
Toohey is recently retired as president of Hallmark International and corporate officer of Hallmark Cards, Inc., the world’s largest publisher of greeting cards and related personal communication products. After joining Hallmark in 1964, Toohey’s assignments included sales, product marketing management before becoming director of product marketing and then division vice president of sales planning and administration. He also served as division vice president, retail management and executive vice president for Hallmark International.
Schroeder is being recognized for her long-time service (30 years) to Black Hills State University. At the university, Schroeder served as assistant registrar from 1948-1964 and as registrar from 1965 to her retirement in 1978. She assisted students with their academic planning such as class schedules, teacher certifications and graduate checks. One of her most enjoyable duties as registrar was putting the final signature on over 5,0000 diplomas.
Petersen taught school in Beulah, Wyo., Nisland, New Underwood, and Custer. In 1941 he enlisted in the civilian pilot-training program and became a flight instructor in 1942. He was later stationed in Rapid City, Los Angeles and Vietnam. In 1970 Lloyd retired from the United State Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. Petersen and his wife, Esther, established an athletic scholarship at the university in 1994.
Forsberg is the owner of Watertown Granite Centre, Granite Design, Western Granite (which wholesales memorials throughout the continental U.S.), and the Sand Creek Trading Post in Beulah, Wyoming. He was named in the 100 Most Influential People in South Dakota in 1995. He serves on the South Dakota State Cement Commission, South Dakota State Fair Foundation, Black Hills State University Foundation and was a delegate to the Presidents White House Conference on Small Business.
Cappa is currently president of Norwest Bank in Rapid City. He joined Norwest in the fall of 1974 and is currently on the board of directors for the Black Hills Workshop, Rapid City Community Health Center, American Cancer Society, Rapid City Chamber of Commerce and BHSU Foundation. He is also past president of the Rapid City United Way and Arrowhead Country Club.
Young taught business courses at BHSU from 1965 to 1987. Young was a charter member of the Black Hills Teachers College faculty wives in 1948 and has held all offices within that organization. She also received the Department of Business Service and Dedication Award from BHSU in 1992 and has a scholarship in her name in the College of Business and Public Affairs. She and her late husband, Donald, have hosted many university activities for alumni and friends in their home.
Adel enrolled at Spearfish Norma in 1939 and today is a retired Appellate Court Judge of Workers’ Compensation Court of Appeals for the State of Minnesota. Prior to his duties in court, Adel was the assistant commissioner and deputy commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, Compensation Counsel and Attorney for the Minnesota Workmen’s Commission and worked in the claim department for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. He also served in the Army Air Force after attending Spearfish Normal/Black Hills Teachers College.
