With my years at BHSU coming to an end soon, I find myself most pleased with the experiences I’ve been able to have over the past few years. These experiences have led up to where I am now, in Spain doing a Study Abroad program, and it would not have been possible without the help of my professors, advisors, and the International Office at BHSU. Even without going to Spain I have enjoyed my time in the Spanish program at BH because not only are the professors friendly and helpful, but they encourage the class to befriend on another to help on their way to Spanish proficiency. Additionally, the Spanish club has always been welcoming and always looks for activities to do to utilize Spanish outside the classroom, and I’ve had a lot of fun with them any time I’ve gone!
I have had a wonderfully enriching experience during my time in the BHSU Spanish program. During school, small class sizes allow for meaningful one-on-one and small group conversations, improving our speaking and communication skills while applying relevant material learned in class. The program has prepared me greatly for this semester in Madrid, Spain. Now, I am sure of my ability to communicate in a Spanish-speaking country, and I have been able to apply so much of my previous learning to my classes here as well. Not only that, but this semester abroad has taught me so much about the world and about myself; it is the experience of a lifetime. A whole new world of communication has opened up for me because I've chosen to earn a Spanish degree, which I plan on implementing in my career with opportunities in education, government, business, international communications, and more. Although I do not know exactly what my future will entail, I am grateful for the options that I have available to me because of the Spanish program here at BHSU.
My experience at BHSU has been truly transformative. I've had the privilege of learning from outstanding professors and connecting with incredible people. As a Spanish Education major, I’ve had access to a diverse range of advanced Spanish courses, which have greatly enhanced my knowledge. Dr. Hsiao, in particular, was an amazing professor who not only strengthened my language skills but also deepened my understanding of Spain’s rich culture. This preparation was invaluable during my time studying abroad in Granada, Spain. I chose to study abroad to immerse myself in the language, culture, and traditions of Spain. While growing up in Mexico gave me a strong foundation in Spanish, living in another Spanish-speaking country opened my eyes to new cultural perspectives. The immersion experience not only improved my language abilities but also equipped me with the tools to create engaging, culturally informed lesson plans for my future students. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and for the unwavering support that BHSU provided me throughout the journey.
