Michael Baum is a South Dakota native, whom over the last twenty years has focused much of his time exploring the mountain ranges of California, Wyoming, Montana, Washington and Alaska. His interactions with nature and the wilderness became the impetus for his graduate studies in fine art, which he completed at Washington State University with an emphasis in drawing and printmaking. Michael is currently an Associate Professor of Studio Art at Black Hills State University.
Since 2008, he has been featured in numerous exhibitions both internationally and across the United States. In 2014, Michael was awarded a career development grant from the South Dakota Arts Council. His recent drawings have been featured in Drawing Discourse: International Exhibition of Contemporary Drawing at The Tucker Cooke Gallery, UNC Asheville. His work has also included in Drawing Lines Across Mediums at Site: Brooklyn, curated by Olga Valle Tetkowski from the Drawing Center, one of the premiere non-for-profit institutions in the world dedicated to the art of drawing. His drawing and print-based work have also been selected for the South Dakota Governor's 6th, 7th and 8th Biennial Exhibitions.
In addition, Michael’s work has been published in INDA 9, Manifest's Drawing Center, International Drawing Annual. Other notable exhibitions spaces include Fictilis, Seattle, Washington, the Mighty Tieton in Tieton, WA, The Plains Art Museum in Fargo, ND and the South Dakota State Museum of Art in Brookings. His work has also been accepted into multiple public collections, which include the Primo Piano Living Gallery, Lecce, Italy, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art in Oregon, the Museum of Art/WSU in Washington, the Boise Art Museum, Idaho, as well as the Missoula Art Museum in Montana.
